In front, below the larger, downward pointing spray, a design worked in silver and gold, of stylized undulating plumes, all upside down, made its way to the bottom of the gown, which was edged with thin gold brocade. As if this were not enough, Lady Ulma had had a fan made with real peacock eyes set in an emerald jade handle, with a tassel of softly clinking jade, citrine, and emerald charms at the bottom. Around Bonnie’s throat was a matching necklace of jade, inlaid with emerald, sapphire, and lapis lazuli. And around each of her wrists were several emerald jade bracelets that clicked together whenever she moved, the symbol of her slavery. But Bonnie’s eyes could hardly linger on them, and she couldn’t summon up a proper hatred of the bracelets. She was thinking of how a special hairdresser had come to â€Å"slick back† Bonnie’s strawberry-colored curls until, darkened into true red, they were plastered flat against her skull and held in place with jade and emerald clips. Her heart-shaped face had never looked so mature, so sophisticated. At Elena’s throat, an exquisitely designed golden and mother-of-pearl necklace in the stylized shape of a butterfly was inset with so many diamonds that it seemed to blaze with multicolored fire each time she moved and they caught the light. And that was all. Ernest Hemingway Ernest Miller "Papa" Hemingway Ernest Hemingway is easily reconized by many scholars and outdoorsman because of his lifestyle. During his life he left a legacy for some and a disaster for others. Although he was on top of the world at some point or another, his life wasn't always as fortunate. He had problems, like everyone has, but it wasn't his fault he could not stay satisfied and couldn't keep women. Hemingway was not only a writer, but a vetern, fisherman and hunter, a loving father. Ernest Miller Hemingway was born at eight o'clock in the morning on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois (Shaw viii) . Born in the family home at 439 North Oak Park Avenue, a house built by his widowed grandfather Ernest Hall, Hemingway was the second of Dr. Clarence and Grace Hall Hemingway's six children; he had four sisters and one brother (McDowell 11). He was named after his maternal grandfather Ernest Hall and his great uncle Miller Hall. As a boy he was taught by his father to hunt and fish along the shores and in the forests surrounding Lake Michigan (Shaw 17). The Hemingways had a summer house at the northern end of Lake Michigan and the family would spend the summer months there trying to stay cool. Hemingway would either fish the different streams that ran into the lake, or would take the row boat out on the bay and do some fishing there. He discovered early in life the serenity to be found while alone in the forest. It was something he could always go back to throughout his life, wherever he was. Nature would be the touchstone of Hemingway's life and work. Hemingway received his formal schooling in the Oak Park public school system. In high school he was mediocre at sports, playing football, swimming, water basketball and serving as the track team manager (Burgess 15). He enjoyed working on the high school newspaper called the Trapeze, where he wrote his first articles. Hemingway graduated in the spring of 1917 and instead of going to college the following fall like his parents expected, he took a job as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star (Shaw viii). At the time of Hemingway's graduation from High School, World War I was raging in Europe and despite Woodrow Wilson's attempts to keep America out of the war, the United States joined the Allies in the fight against Germany and Austria in April, 1917 (Shaw). When Hemingway turned eighteen he tried to enlist in the army, but was deferred because of poor vision; he had a bad left eye that he probably inherited from his mother, who also had poor vision. There are times in everyone life when the person introspects himself and wish to do something for the happiness and satisfaction of soul. I also had such moment and then a thought of doing something for the good cause evolved in me. I wanted to do something selflessly for someone and help the society which eventually will satiate my soul and give me peace. I joined an organization which helps poor children by providing them education and teach them to cope up with life as an orphan. Government provides them support but that is not enough. In my view, they need more care and a guide who can hold their hand and show them the right path. My part of betterment of society would include teaching computers to such students. I feel that computer education is necessary for everyone in current times and thus by utilizing my skills and utter dedication towards helping the needy people, I would teach them to stand face to face with the current technological needs. I am seriously excited about my involvement in the society. Helping someone selflessly and seeing that you can be of value to someone is truly satisfying. The thing which my soul is seeking is the happiness, the sparkle of achievement in the eyes of those children when they would gain knowledge and would be able to make their life worthwhile. Though, I am nervous too about the extent by what I will be able to provide what they seek from me. Every person has expectations and even those students would have some expectations from me. But, there are some children who are from various parts of the world and who have different cultures imbibed in them since birth which cannot be washed easily. What I have felt is that the language of words is not important if you wish to connect with the students. It has never been a problem to me as children connect through emotions rather than words. Thus the language of feelings is more important than language of words. I have had experiences with teaching children who do not speak English, but still I was able to connect to them emotionally and helped them understand things which my language skills could not do. Yes, there are some limitations because of the language barriers but both children and me put efforts together and surpassed this limitation. The orphanage is a mini world where you would find children of different religions, regions and some students do carry their past life with them, which inculcates different culture in them. I as a person did not pay attention to the differences but the similarities and the factors which joined us as a person. This is the culture which I faced in the orphanage which I learned by seeing the children of different cast and creed joined by the hearts. This humanity, this innocence is what separates them from the real world outside this orphanage where people are ready to fight for their religion, their region and are busy in enmity to an extent that they don’t have time for love. In this world, there are three most important things which society needs to make the world a better place. First is food, which is important to stay alive. The world is a cruel place with a lot of competition in each field and education is the weapon which helps every person to fight and win the war against it. I played the role of provider of that weapon which they hold proudly and are gearing up for the battle. I added value to their lives in the form of education and the knowledge which would help them make their lives better and can enable them to progress in their lives. The volunteering process was a beautiful one and it really gave me peace which I would not have got by any other way. Yes there were challenges but no challenge is as big as the willpower. I faced a challenge of emotional disconnect with the children as they used to see me as an outsider to their world and stayed aloof. Gradually, the things changed and there was a sense of emotional attachment which made us overcome this obstacle and we shared the world where they gained the knowledge and I gained solace through helping them. The whole thing was not as I pictured it of being a simple teaching like a school. It made me see a different world altogether which I never perceived. Each child was different and dealing with them was different which made me analyze the world, the feelings of people and the emotions and their role in people’s lives which I never could have imagined before. The assumptions of a fair world where people are just the same broke into pieces through this volunteer task. The task was selflessly chosen and I never expected anything in return other than the peace which I would get through it. I did not get any scholarly awards or any recognition by this help but it has given me the most important gift, the gift of high thinking. During this volunteer project, I had learned a lot about the people, the world and the things which I always tend to oversee. This is not a short term benefit but indeed is a benefit  which would help me my whole life. The way I think has changed and I can analyze in a better way which would help me in my career and my personal life too. This experience has taught me a lot of things and I am definite that I would always be volunteering in one way or the other. Helping the society is all it takes to be at peace and to develop a feeling of pride. I would want to volunteer again and in a better way possible. Moreover, the faculty in the organization feel uncertain about the new concepts presented by Dr. Ball to the deans altering their salaries and evaluations (Bolma n Deal, 2013, p. 31). The proposed changes create competition and unrest among the faculty and will shatter the business-as-usual campus conduct and job security. The deans and faculty are grasping at the symbolic frame, defending their beloved academic lifestyle (Bolman Deal, 2013, p. 248). The secondary problem in this case is support from the deans of the incentive program that will restore Weston University prestigious reputation as set by the board and developed by the president. Stakeholders The stakeholders involved are the board of Weston, new president, deans and faculty. The boards stake in the new president is by taking a risk on her ability to achieve the goal of rebuilding Westons reputation. Next, Dr. Balls confidence lies within the board, and rejecting her incentive program will endanger her leadership status. Dr. Balls stakes are high using the Kotters change strategy is risky, sticking to the process and refusing to quit (Bolman Deal, 2013, p. 390). Furthermore, if the incentive program is rejected, Dr. Ball will lose her creditability before the deans and faculty and her ability to lead the college.
